Peg Perego is probably the most well-known Italian manufacturer of baby car seats, famous for their quality models that combine beauty and functionality. Today, we’ll be taking a look at their most popular rear-facing infant car seat yet – the Primo Viaggio.

It’s one of the most comfortable baby car seats that money can buy today, but also a very safe one due to its EPS foam construction. It allows parents to install it by using their vehicle’s LATCH system and is compact enough for easy transportation. Let’s go over the details!

Features of Peg Perego Primo Viaggio

  • The Design

This seat is, without a doubt, the most glamorously designed model we have tested so far. The reason behind that is, of course, the fact that this is an Italian-made car seat, and those guys certainly know how to make things beautiful and attractive. There are 17 different colors to choose from, so it’s quite easy to match the color of the seat with your vehicle’s interior.

The Primo Viaggio is also easy to maintain – its upholstery is removable and washable (which can’t be said for the cushioning), and you won’t have problems with pulling the puff crumbs out of the model’s crevices.

Another thing worth mentioning is that this model comes with a very narrow base (only 14.6″ wide), which makes it a perfect choice for the owners of compact cars.

  • The Comfort

The cushioning of this infant car seat is soft and plush, ensuring comfortable car rides for your little one. The padding and the headrest were made out of innovative microfiber fabric (“Comfort Dry”) that’s breathable and capable of removing the excess moisture. This will come in very handy during the hot summer months. The package also includes an additional removable insert which you can use to provide your newborn with some extra support.

  • The Safety

When it comes to car seats, the safety is the most crucial factor – a model with proper safety features brings a peace of mind to parents of the small babies. Fortunately, the headrest and the shell of this seat are lined with EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) foam for the necessary impact protection. The model also features an adjustable SIP (Side Impact Protection) that can be moved to six different positions with just one push of a button.

The 5-point harness of this seat is yet another entirely adjustable thing here, as one only has to use the harness adjustor button. The last safety feature is the anti-rebound bar, which is the only thing you’ll have to install manually. Make sure to do that – it provides additional protection in the case of a car crash.

The seat is suitable for babies who weigh from 4 to 35 pounds, and are up to 32″ tall. It’s a rear-facing seat and can be installed via the LATCH system, by using the belt, and without the base. For more on that, take a look at the Ease of Installation part of our review.

Ease of Installation

Like we already said, the Primo Viaggio can be installed via the LATCH system, which is always the safest option. The anchor of this model is very easy to use and is utilized by being pressed on the car’s LATCH anchor. Releasing it is even easier – one only has to push the big red button. The straps, on the other hand, are easy to tighten but a bit difficult to loosen.

The level of this seat is a well-made bubble indicator in a capsule with green liquid. It works just like your ordinary construction level – it is consistent and a much better choice than the ball-style levels on the models of other manufacturers. The base recline can be adjusted by using the dedicated knob.

  • Belt

The model comes with a belt lock off on its base, which is there to make the belt installation as quick and straightforward as possible. The belt-thread openings aren’t holes like on the other models, but they’re only somewhat open and make threading a real breeze.

Once installed in this way, the seat will feel stable whether you use just the lap belt or the lap/shoulder belt combo. In our opinion, the base of this model has lock offs that are easier to use than those on any other infant car seat.

  • Without the Base

Per Perego Primo Viaggio comes with a color-coded European belt path. This means that the shoulder section of the car’s belt goes around the back of the model and threads under the dedicated clip. The lap section, on the other hand, goes across the lower part of the seat. You won’t have to use towels to achieve a proper fit.

What’s wrong with the product?

  • The cushion can’t be washed in the washing machine

Unlike the upholstery, the cushioning of this model cannot be washed in a washing machine, which is a serious disadvantage and will force you to find a way to keep the cushioning from getting messy.

  • When the canopy is extended, the carrier is difficult to use

Once you fully extend the canopy, using the carry handle will become somewhat uncomfortable. This is the only flaw in the exceptional design of this attractive model.

With an impeccable design, excellent safety features, and easy installation, the Primo Viaggio stands as one of the best infant car seats that money can buy today. The Italian engineers managed to create an outstanding model and one that’s bound to become very popular in the coming years.

It has only a few minor errors – but they’re nothing when compared to a large number of advantages that this model comes with. It’s a great deal and purchase that you won’t regret.
